Buzz Cut: What's in store for '04? It's been a while since the last time updated this sucker. Let's see ... what, or who, can I blame? Surely, not myself. Between the holidays and the end of another school semester (not to mention partying like rock stars while Mario was home), there simply wasn't enough time for consistent updates. Even workhorses like me (ha!) need a break. Oh, but don't think I was simply neglecting the Buzz Cut. Me? Never! While I was on my unannounced leave of absence, I was busy doing interviews and preparing a series of articles for the site. You readers are definitely in for a treat. The first article is going to be for all of you crazy college kids out there looking to become animators. I spoke with CalArts teacher and animator Mike Disa about the future of animation. Is it going to be a CG-centric world or is there room for old-fashioned, kick ass traditional animation as well? What exactly should students hone their skills in? His insights and opinions on the subject are extraordinary, so it isn't to be missed. Trust me, it'll leave all you worried kids out there feeling pretty pleased about the scary world after college. You know, when you actually have to get a real job and aren't under your parents insurance anymore (*shudders*). The second article will feature Eddie Pittman, who's currently the directing manager of Legacy Animation Studios. The operation recently started up and employs some ex-Disney animators. They're goal is to preserve Disney’s legacy in quality traditional hand-drawn animation. You'll get Pittman's thoughts on the 2D vs. 3D debate, as well finding out why he believes that with studios abandoning traditional animation, in time, the quality of the art could be lost. After talking to the pros out there in the field, the Buzz Cut will switch gears and talk to a student learning his craft: Animated Buzz owner Mario Furmanczyk. He's been busting his butt at CalArts since last fall. In addition to reading about his semester in the CalArts Journal, visitors to the site will now get to hear some more of his thoughts on CalArts and how the school is preparing future animators for what some see as an uncertain, changing industry. I'll also collect all of the work he's been doing this semester and hook up a good directory of links all in one hot spot. Nifty, huh? In addition to all that, there's some catching up to do in regards to articles that should have hit late last year. The second part of the Animated Movies Blowout will arrive sometime in February or March following the aforementioned series on the animation industry. After that, I talk to George Mackay, who regulars in the Animated Buzz forum know as IkarusCrow. Mackay has had a wonderful comic strip running for awhile now and is a regular contributor to the forums. I'll highlight his work and the crazy characters in the world of Feek. Eventually, I'll get back to giving my own ridiculous opinions on the world of animation, so those clamoring for some insights from Chris Douvalas needn't worry. It's going to be an oustanding year for Animated Buzz. Buckle up and join us for the ride as we embark on our third year of operation. |
