Hi everyone. My name is Will Kim and I am here to introduce myself as one of the animation tutors on animatedbuzz and I am excited and honored to do so. These attached pictures are some of my life drawings I wanted to share with you. Please feel free to ask me any question.
I am a Los Angeles based artist and filmmaker. Ever since I could hold a pencil, I wanted to be an artist so I kept painting and drawing while I grew up in Korea and partially in LA. Upon graduating from South Pasadena High School in Southern California, I attended Cal Arts to study and pursue figurative art and filmmaking. At Cal Arts, I gained an extensive experience in art and animation taught by various independent artists and industry professionals. As I pursued animation in search for my own technique and voice throughout 4 years at CalArts, with extra supports of my mentors Corny Cole III, Leo Hobaica Jr, Dan Hansen, and Frank Terry among others, I created a number of animated short films that were entirely animated with “watercolor” on paper. Those watercolor animations opened up lots of opportunities of working for documentary films, live action films, commercials, and visual effects/stage art.
At Cal Arts, I started my teaching career in visual arts and animation by first being a student instructor at various sites of Cal Arts, Community Arts Partnership (CAP) program which was in partnership with Sony Pictures Media Arts Program and Los Angeles Cultural Affairs. After a several years I continued to teach at CAP as a life drawing instructor for media arts classes.
In this program, along with my co-instructors, I had successfully supported and nurtured many middle school students achieve scholarships, high school students get in to CSSSA (California State Summer School for the Arts), and finally helped my students get accepted to arts schools such as Cal Arts. And now, I teach at Riverside City College Art Department and I am serving as RCC Animation Showcase Director and the RCC Art Club Advisor.
During my 4th year at Cal Arts, I decided to continue to make films at such productive and
inspiring environment. In order to do that, I applied to a number of grad schools and among the grad schools for Animation/Film I got accepted I attended UCLA Film and TV program where I achieved an MFA degree in 2009.
In independent filmmaking, my personal short films have been showing at number of worldwide known international animation and film festivals such as Hiroshima International Animation Festival, Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival, Ashland Independent Film Festival, AFI Dallas, San Diego Asian Film Festival, Melbourne Int Animation Festival, DC Independent Film Festival, etc.
Also, my art and film were introduced on “Animation Magazine” September 2007 issue and on “Cartoon Brew” in December 2013
As an animation director and a lead animator, I have participated in various feature and short live action films that won various awards throughout international film festivals like Los Angeles Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, France Int. Environmental Film Festival, Cancoon Climate Change Conference, Int. Wildlife Film Festival, Environmantal Film Festival at the Nation's Capitol, and Festival de Cannes.
Along with my Cal Arts & UCLA classmate and colleague, Pouya Afshar, with my painterly animation, I worked as a stage visual effects artist for Lian Ensemble, a Persian Music Ensemble that performed at the Getty Center, USC, New York Town Hall among many others. Also, along with my Cal Arts colleague, Dave Creek's animation, I got to do a watercolor painting animation for a couple of scenes for a feature film "Youth in Revolt" (Dimension Film) through Hornet Inc.
As I was suggested to think about a list of books animation students to read as they pursue cinematic arts, I thought of these books. “Animation Sketchbooks by Laura Heit,” “Cinematic Storytelling by Jennifer Van Sijll,” “Art in Motion by Maureen Furniss,” “Elemental Magic The Art of Special Effects Animation by Joseph Gilland,” “Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston” among many others.
I am a huge fan of animated films from National Film Board of Canada and I am an animal lover. I love celebrating life through my drawaings and animation. Lastly, I want to thank you for reading this and you can visit my personal website here to view more of my works and you can follow me on tumblr here!
