I think both schools are excellent. And both can give you the technical and conceptual education you need.  And it's true that you can always supplement the technical stuff by taking some other online classes later on.  I think at this point you have to really sit back and figure out what feels right to you.  Perhaps more of an intuitive feelings. Both options have different advantages.  So it's kind of like buying a house.  Just get a sense for what feels right to you.  I think the first step is to relax!  And take a day off from thinking about it.  See how you feel in a couple days once you clear your mind. Go for a road trip.  Good luck and keep us posted!  Congrats on getting accepted to both programs!

Oh my god Thank you so much for aswearing me! Yeah I should really calm down and think about what I feel about.....Though honestly I have mixed feelings for both schools lol. CalArts give me the impression of super fun, lively, and precaps easy to be too playful; while Risd is very academic, and kind of serious lol, but would be kind of harder to make friends.

For the overall impression and the style, actually I prefer CalArts, bacause I like lively atmosphere and I like sunny days (Risd here is pretty rainy lol, though it's good in winter because I like snow), and most of the majors in CalArts are very interesting to me, like theater and music and so on, while for Risd, at least I have no idea how can I take advantage of those design departments. )But still I like how Risd values the class time and academics And how people here are kind of all pretty serious at learning liberal courses, and sometimes I just feel pretty emotionally attached to Risd which make me don't want to leave....

But Also I was thinking of going to MFA in CalArt...Then I may consider finish the courses here in Risd first. Though it's too far for now.

Again thank you so much for your reply!! I will definitely keep posting what I feel until I decided!

    • Oh by the way Masaaki Yuasa was also fine art major--painting, which kind of make me think maybe I can learn techniques in studios.....or is it just my misunderstanding?

    • Hi everyone, I am a current student in Risd 2020 going to animation. I got the acceptance from CalArts as Character Animation 2021, and they offer me 8000$ scholarship. But I has been hesitating for going or not for a month, and I have to decide before next week.

I originally really don't like Risd, but after a year of foundation study my mind is changed. I somehow understand how important to be innovative and experimental because that is how Risd people do crazy and amazing stuff. I started interested experimental animation and new material, and even new narrative.

However, I still have my love in character animation and story. In fact I am a very narrative based person and I am not so conceptual to make totally abstract animation. I love Masaaki Yuasa's animation. My dream is do character animation with experimental element.

Risd don't really have a strong base for animation technique, while CalArts have it. But I do hear that CalArts character animation is conventional and people teach more Disney narrative rather than innovative ones.

However, for color, background, or visual stuff, Risd has illustration program which I can take advantage of. The only thing that could not make up is the animation training itself

But Risd Fav is such a small program compared to Industrial Design or Illustration, while Film and Video is the largest department in CalArts. CalArts has way more teachers than Risd does.

For job, I don't really want to work for big studios. I like small studios and independent films. But I also dont want to always do advertisement, I want to make good animated shorts.

So should I stay in Risd and make up technical stuff by online learning or something, or should I go to CalArts and take experimental animation by the way? Or in an other way, what is more important to learn in College? Conceptual thinking or strong techniques?

I have been thinking of the relationship between techninques and concepts for a long time. I still think techniques is the tool to render my thoughts. I saw senior show for Risd Furniture and Textile, and the craftsmanship is stunning. while Risd fav films are not very well made, though all pretty diffevent.

I talked to the department head in Risd fav, and he also admit that Risd has broad direction but lack of depth in training.

Thank you guys very much, I would super appreciate it if you answe my question. Also if you guys have any questions in terms of applying for CalArts, I can give you advices.

    • You can always have the option of taking character classes as an experiemtnal student.  One of my friends Hyun Min Lee did just that. It worked out great for her!

    • Oh my god I have the same dilemma, though it's between Risd and CalArts. I am sorry I also don't know the answer...looking for advices with you!

I got rejected for the summer residency program... I'm wondering if I should even bother applying to the character animation program in the fall.  My rejection email said the following:

Thank you for your interest in Summer Residencies at CalArts! We regret to inform you we cannot offer you admission into the program this year but encourage you to keep drawing and consider reapplying in the future.

We also offer three online portfolio building workshops that you may be interested in. Please visit the Extended Studies Animation Page for information.

      Sincerely,
      CalArts Office of Extended Studies

Does anyone know if this is just a default email or if it says something different for each applicant?

It might be worth applying to the online workshops if they recommended it. I know for my Fall 2017 application they didn't mention anything about applying for other programs, but some people did get the recommendation. Taking classes at local community centers or even applying for a one year diploma program like VanArts could be a good substitute for the residency. I wish I could say more to lift your spirits, but there are definitely places for you to peruse your studies. I wouldn't let anything stop you from applying to them.

Oh sir btw is it literally for the applicants who apply for Calarts until 2018 January? And I need to show my instagram account in this page right?

Nothing so strict! You are free to share your Instagram if you would like. This post is for people who are going to be submitting an application this winter and will hopefully be accepted to the 2018 fall semester. If you intend to apply for the 2019 semester instead, or applied last year and want to make a comment, you are welcome to post on here!

      Ok appreciate it so much-!

    • Hi, I'm an international student and just graduate from high school. I'm really interested in learning animation, concept art, as well as character designs (especially fantasy and sci-fi) and would like to learn deeper in 3D. Currently I'm still learning 2d simple animation with ToonBoom Harmony and some storyboards as well.

I have been looking for animation univeristy in New Zealand and I'm wondering if you guys could tell me a good animation university in New Zealand which is affordable. It doesn't matter whether it is a diploma or bachelor. I've heard some universities such as Media Design School and Animation College in Auckland, what do you think about that? Or probably you have another reccomendations?

      Thank you
