Hi ~
I actually thought I saw a post on this several months ago, but now I can't find it anywhere in this forum !
This is mostly directed to current or past CalArts student ~
When do you start working on your student film ? stuff like rough scripting, story boarding, character designing ? Do you do all these in your first term ? And when do you really start animating ? In the beginning of spring ? How long are you given to work from the beginning of your short film to the end ? Basically from pre-production till the delivery date !
I hope I didn't ask for too much ! Just wanted to know so I could have an early preparation on when to really start putting things in motion ! -
Actually, the best answer is whenever you want to. The earlier the better. Sometimes teachers want you to meet certain deadlines, but it's eventually up to you how you schedule yourself.
Most people in my class got an idea first semester, did storyboards, and then began animating sometime second semester. -
The school is trying to make it more of a all year thing right now. If you are a student coming into calarts this year i would not worry about coming in with an idea. You learn so much in your first semester that if you do have an idea you will probably change it by the time winter break comes around. -

So do we have to pitch our story in front of the whole class ? I think I've read that in Mario's blog but I'm not sure if it's still a practice over there now, would be really cool if it is though ! It would really feel like being at work at a Studio I suppose !
Oh and also, are there any time constraints on how long should the short film be ? I have some stories in my head now but they'll probably need to get trimmed down if needed be ..
