Josh: um.. no I did NOT do that. I have created a folder for selected works of my sketchbook and tossed them all in there as I did not have time to paste a WHOLE sketchbook in. I did this last year and they didnt mind at all. As for the rest of the portfolio each drawings was placed well placed in the page and organized with very good presentation in my opinion. And I dont know why the photos came out looking more wrinkled than they really are cause in real life I swear to god they are not THAT wrinkly. ....weird. Thanks again though for the heads up!

i'm applying for Character Animation. I had a sketchbook filled with more character designs and life drawings, but I was in such a nervous rush to get everything in order that I completely forgot to take pictures or scans of the book. (I did pay the return postage to get it back)

Sam: I used photo reference for 80% of my life drawings in my last year's portfolio. Although I was rejected last year, there was absolutely no comments on my portfolio or criticism based on my life drawings. My theory if the drawings are good than it doesn't matter. Besides Ryan had some awesome gestures so I'd say he's good to go. yeah?

true, but I think it's better to draw from life when you can. That way you have a much better sense of the 3D space the subject occupies and with living things there's the added bonus of seeing how they move. Of course if the important thing is how good the drawing is in the end then who cares, but I think there's more you can learn from life than photos so it's better for studies.

Oh agreed man! Definitely from life is preferred, and you are completely right on everything you have used to explain WHY drawing from life is better. But for instance on my last portfolio I didn't have the capabilities or resources to draw nudes from life so I purchased a bunch of life drawing model software and did my best with what I had.

i agree with both of you guys to be honest....a well informed drawing works best when a live model is present, but I was in the same boat; I had a few instances where I just couldn't make it down to Philadelphia from North NJ to use the life drawing models I used to have access to when I attended school there. BUT, a strong knowledge of anatomy and form can be applied alongside creative license and you can get some pretty great results from having just used a photograph, or in Z.M's case, some software. Posemaniac.com has some great 3D models that you can rotate and use to really wrap your pencil around!

This is my first time applying to CalArts...I'm seeing a lot of awesome stuff- best of luck to everyone! This has been a nerve-wracking process, and I think I've learned so much from the school already- just based on all of the research into the history, the legendary alumni, and the amazing faculty. I hope to see many of you come fall!

It's sort of a relief to know that I'm not the only one feeling anxious and nervous after sending off my portfolio! Been feeling like that since the end of November, haha.
Now I must go hibernate until March...
Just kidding, I'll try my best to stay positive and to keep on drawing! -
