2012 Calarts Applicants

Victoria, I am SO with you on this. There is little to NO reference for experimental. Maybe at some point we should make a thread just for Experimental application discussion and sharing...
I didn't really include any drawings, just a couple. I started regretting it right away. I can't help but keep going over, what else should I have included, should I have elaborated on my presentation, etc... I did personalize my portfolio a bit-but not anything like you or Matthew. This is the first visual art portfolio I have put together, and I couldn't find any reference (found this site too late) to how others had compiled their portfolios. I just had it in a clean black box with a label on it. Then I used a regular black portfolio I got a Blick and painted and texurized the cover a bit for a cosmosey lookin thing. Written work went in a glossy white labeled folder. DVDs had a sticker with my Cosmos painting and name and tracks. I was super organized about it all year, and went back and forth so much about the presentation. Didn't want to distract from the work so I kept it pretty plain...kinda wishing I hadn't done that...I dunno...So many doubts!!
But also so many positive thoughts. I know this is my next path. If the road is a bit longer that's okay...it's already been pretty long! *just keep swimming swimming swimming* :) -
Victoria and Mary, I think that's a wonderful idea!
I'm going into character animation, but for the longest time, I was really curious what experimental animation was.
Besides AnimatedBuzz, no other website really provided an answer to that.
Other sites just gave vague answers like, "Oh, it's claymation" or "It's everything character animation is not." (lol)
Thank you for sharing everything (your portfolios, your experiences), because they have been really helpful to me, and I think they will be helpful to everyone, both experimental and character animators! -

Calarts is doing something new this year as far as checking your application status. I received an email that allows me to check on the application status and the materials received list. This is something that I don't think they had last year; or at least, I didn't know about it.
When I logged in it showed that they received all of my materials, except my high school transcripts. The words MISSING appeared in bold. I got worried. I have my AA degree, so I was pretty sure that they wouldn't need to see anything from my high school days. But since it says I'm missing something, all I'm thinking is they're not going to review my portfolio.
So, I called the other day and luckily, I don't need my h.s. transcripts.
Crazy, crazy.

hi,matthew!!! i met the same problem!! i check my status ,it is also shown that my transcript is missing,and my status is pending on reviewing . is that mean they won't see my file until they get my transcript?? i immediately sent a digital copy of my transcript ,but no replies yet!! i am so worried.

As long as you have an AA or BA degree from a regionally accredited school, you don't need to send your high school transcripts. For most colleges, if you've acquired over 30 college credits, your h.s. transcripts aren't required.
I think the "material received checklist" is a default list of their requirements. It doesn't factor in people with degrees.
If you're unsure about anything, it's always best to call admissions directly.

Hey Dream, I had the same issue last year when applying to CalArts. What you can do now is just give them a call as soon as possible and do not wait. At the mean time, get your high school transcripts and scan them so you can send them a digital copy. I would suggest you call them right away and DO NOT WAIT ! Gd luck ! -
I dreamt that, while at an auction for production art for various animated shows and movies, i recieved my calarts acceptance letter. it was green and decorated (kind of like the Grimmerie from Wicked), and said 'welcome to calarts school of witchcraft and wizardry' on it, and i was like "wow, how early! it's still only January, and I got my letter!!" then i skipped down the hallway of art till i woke up
i feel more and more antsy as march gets closer -

I've had so many "I got in" dreams that I just started getting really sad. In one of my dreams the letter was a popup card, where the popup portion was just a little decorative frame around the actual text. I woke up and thought "I will do this." and if I should get in, I will find out who I have to get in touch with to be allowed to send popup cards at least SOME of the people who get in. I have a digital cutter. I would do on my own time for free if I could get my hands on some cardstock and ink. D:
