To me Coppola peaked in the 70s, and has been somewhat inconsistent since then, still let's just pretend Jack didn't happen.
What makes me mad is most of the nominated movies have yet to get to my country, and they probably only will if they win an oscar. Yet, mainstream blockbusters get released on the same day it premiers elsewhere. -

Mexico, thing is, if you don't live in one the main 3 cities in the country (as is my case) you are pretty much screwed culturally speaking. I even remember some cases when the DVD was released before the movie hit the theathers.

I am. And yes, Hugo is dominating, lol. It's both disappointing and funny. But it deserves it, I'm sure. It looks like a beautiful movie. I knew Rango would win it but eh.. I still didn't like it too much.
Funny, after hugo sweeped the beginning The Artist took home the big prizes for Director, Actor, and PICTURE! AWESOMMME! So happy I got to see it! History has been made.
So glad The Artist could get it.

Strange how thoroughly dreadfully Winnie the Pooh did on the awards circuit. Although I'm glad that the academy at least took the opportunity to bring attention to two low budget foreign animated films. Better than what the Golden Globes do with their animated category which, as in all things Globes related, is nothing but unmitigated cuntery.
At this point the only category I particularly follow is "best cinematography," because I'm fascinated by the academy's ability to fuck it up so consistently. Emanuel Lubezki deserves at least three oscars now, but since Children of Men couldn't earn him one I'm not quite sure what possibly can.

Well, truth to be told, Oscars and every other major award show has turned into a bragging ceremony in which only those with the most influences win. Heck, even Cannes which I once used to respect has turned more into bluffing than actually rewarding artistic merits.
Still, if it weren't because of the oscars most of these nominated films wouldn't even make it to my local cinemas, so I'm somewhat thankful for giving them more coverage.
By the way, Alice in wonderland was an awful mess.
