Hey everyone I'm quite new here :) But seeing all the Art center students here and the alumni present as well, I think its a great place to post this question. I am planning to apply to Art center college of design for their illustration program. However, I am currently facing a big problem in doing life drawing pieces
I live in a country where essentially it is hard to conduct any life drawing classes. And so far, having searched high and low have found none. I wonder if I could substitute live drawing with drawing figures from photos instead? Would that make a difference? I wonder if anyone had any advice to give on portfolio preparation and different tips that might help as well :) I see alot of really great Calarts portfolios here
Cheers
Hi Ileana ! seeing that you're from Malaysia I understand why there's access to none of these life drawing classes. I'm a Malaysian as well and I applied to CalArts Character Animation program for fall 2011.What I did was just what Amanda mentioned above, draw people you know. I asked my friends and sister to pose for me, and I also went to the park in the weekends where crowds of people gather up over there. I'm not sure what Art Center College Of Design is looking out for in an applicant's portfolio but I'm guessing that most of the Art Colleges out there are really looking forward to see distinctive art style ,good gesture drawings and good understanding of basic human anatomy. I'm sure you'll be able to get your friends or family to pose for you, and good luck !! :)
I just got into CalArts character for the 2011 year, and I didn't include any figure drawings at all. They don't require figure drawing per say - they just ask for 15+ "observational drawings". It just so happens that most people take this to mean figure drawing. My observational drawings (and I included exactly 15, by the way) were composed mostly of zoo drawings and drawings of crowds. I think they really like seeing unconventional portfolios, so definitely don't be afraid to go against the grain!
