CalArts Applicants 2018

    Ee-yo! It's a Duck.

For all newcomers to AB, this is a discussion thread to chat with fellow CalArts applicants, receive critique, and stalk the competition >:)

Here are some past threads for you to peruse if you want

    2016: http://www.animatedbuzz.com/forums/topic/688/calarts-applicants-2016

    2017: http://www.animatedbuzz.com/forums/topic/754/cal-arts-applicants-2017

Comment below and I'll add you to the thread's list. Including a link to a portfolio or blog would be cool if you're okay with people stalking your art ;) (don't pretend like you don't do it). I'm not much for hollow encouragement or speeches, but I'll do my best to keep the thread updated and organized.

If you see this thread before late April, consider applying to the CalArts Animation Residency from May 22nd to June 23rd. It is a story, drawing and design workshop that can help prep students for their application.

    http://extendedstudies.calarts.edu/animation-residency

There is also an online Portfolio workshop that starts in September:

    https://www.calarts.edu/extended-studies/pdw/visual-storytelling

    Some FAQ:

-You can submit more than one sketchbook.

-Cover Letters are generally 1pg - 1 1/2pg in length. It is okay to go over or under that limit.

-The order you submit your slideroom portfolio and your online application in doesn't matter.

-If you have applied to CalArts before, you need to create a new online application a with a different email.

-Experimental Animation applicants tend to receive their decision before Character Animation applicants.

-It can take several weeks after the application deadline for your transcripts to be marked as 'received' on the VIP checklist. Don't worry! A few days after you make the payment on your transcript, you should receive an email from the sending company confirming they have been received by CalArts. If you have this email, you are probably safe. (Note: This email can be different from the electronic receipt!)

    [Receipt]

    [Notice of Delivery]

-Your decision will appear on your Portal Application page in March.

I don't know if you found out or not but I just contacted Calarts admissions and they told me to contact Jela Ingertila, the animation counsler. Her email is: jingertila@calarts.edu I contacted her and she told me that she will not be taking appointments until after May 8th because of all the other stuff they have going on now. You can make an appointment for an in person session at Calarts or an online session!

hello!! first timer applying to experimental animation straight out of high school! :) if anyone has any good info on what they're specifically looking for for experimental please tell me, cause the internet is suuuuper vague about it

Heya!  I don't think I'll be ready to apply for 2018 but that doesn't mean I won't work hard everyday to get into Character Animation.  I am hoping to have some work up soon for critique.  I've never had my work critiqued before so I imagine it'll lead to some major improvement, hopefully.

    Please add me!

I wanted to apply for Fall of 2018, as that's when I'm graduating high school, but I wasn't sure if that would be too early.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to whether or not it's a plausible goal for high school graduates to get accepted?

If I did get rejected and I attended a different Art school, could I still apply every year until I did get in? Or do they not like transfers?

    (sorry for so many questions!)

Here is my Art Instagram if anyone wanted to support each other! :> @deadoodle

There is a large number of transfer students at the school, but it is also possible to get in right out of highschool. I've seen a few people online who have applied 5 times or more! You can apply as many times as you need.
