Well from what i've learned yoour sketchbook is your best friend. Take one with you whenever you can and just do tons and tons of observational drawings. If you have a large mirror do some self portraits of yourself. When you dont have option of going to classes you just need to be more creative. Theres only one life drawing class in my area, but theres also an open studio where anyone who pays can draw models, which i did for some of my previous portfolio. From what ive read from alot of people on here, and who've applied, you dont have to have a portfolio with nude drawings, you just need to show you understand movement of the figure and how everything works. Ask friends to pose on couch or chair and pay them if they want, lol. Just search around for options. For books, there are a ton, but ones that i have are Walt Stanchfields, Drawn To Life. Also Mike Mattesi, Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators. Those are very helpful and give great...    less

Congratulations to everyone who applied. whether you were accepted or not you took a step to reach for something and thats what life is about. I look forward to the newly accepted students future calarts work, and to seeing the progress everyone makes, for those who decide to reapply. I've been away from the site for a couple weeks so havent updated the accepted students list, so if you really want your name on it just let me know and ill add it, the list seemed so much longer this year :)  less

But yes im working on drawing a more confident line, because ive drawn over a same line several times to where it just looks thick and weird. lol. a habit i need to break. also are you reapplying again next year? Isabelle Aspin- Thank you very much :) I've pretty much been working on observations more and getting things right. Im doing this with charater designs also. I think i got caught up in movement, that i failed to really pay attention to the shapes the body made. But im going to have a RAD portfolio for next year, My main focus is really to keep creativity in mind, and slowly start adding that as i get more comfortable with accurate drawings. Im of course going to be pestering newly accepted students and current students, once the time draws nearer and nearer, lol, so again thank you for your encouraging comments, and CONGRATS on your acceptance. :)  less

Hey Matthew i know its a huge bummer but i think your portfolio screamed talent and theyre only missing out on it. Focus on your stop motion because i think you'll fly high with that.

I really enjoy your linework and shading. When i looked at number 9 i thought that was very nice. Its so little, but so much, if you get what i mean? I mean great lines and great use of shading, just be careful to not forget the hands like on the right figure of number 9. What i think you should focus on more is putting the whole figure onto the page instead of cutting the legs off, or arms, etc. I made that mistake and believe it is part of the reason my portfolio was rejected. I also say that you should work more on your gestures. They're not horrible, just work on showing the gesture of the whole body. When i look at number 8, for some reason im drawn to that left arm. I feel the forearm/ elbow area gets a bit funky. It looks like alot of these are study pieces, and most look very nice. Just keep going because you seem to be on the right track, and dont be afraid the experiment with colors (papers, or drawing med...    less
