If CalArts really wanted to shake things up, they might consider broadening their evaluation criteria so they could assess potential qualities of storytelling, planning, organizing and collaborating that might produce more directors and producers. The portfolio is still important but I think using that as the sole assessment was better suited when CalArts was one of the few schools of animation and when most animation tasks were not shipped offshore to studios in Asia. Portfolios reveal artistic talent but what if that is coupled with a personality that is introverted, withdrawn and anti-social? I don't think Brad Bird, John Lasseter or JG Quintel fit those profiles.
But I think they ARE delving into the realm of stuff the applicants have out there on the good ol' internet. It's quite easy to stumble upon their tumblr and/or blogs to see what they've got going on creatively that DIDN'T make it into the portfolio, or expand on what WAS included. I have only checked out a few, primarily the fresh outta HS crowd, as I was curious what they had that CalArts picked up on. They've got webcomics, story ideas and character design coming out of their ears, and they have very attractive styles to boost. Not to mention their personalities come out in a way that they can't in a portfolio. This is a clever bunch and I am excited to see where they go!
