In 2012 there was a total of 56 applicants out of ~480 admitted to Character Animation Animation. That means that half of last year's accepted applicants found/posted on these forums, and half didn't. I don't really have a point that I'm trying to make; it's not like knowing any of this is going to have an impact on when any of us will receive our decisions, or what those decisions will be. I guess I'm just anxious and searching for anything that could serve as an indication for what's to come. Here's to (im)patiently awaiting those emails, folks.  less

No joke Josh, I did the exact same thing on paper. Either Character Animation is running behind the other departments, or the people being accepted aren't forum members/aren't posting about it. Photography and Dance have been sending out letters for weeks.

As soon as I got done wtih my portfolio I felt confident in myself. And I guess because of that, even If I don't get accepted I'm not going to see myself as someone not good enough because as artists we get better everyday if we push ourselves hard enough. I'm just happy that I tried new things and had fun. I agree! I learned a lot and tried out things I don't think I would have just from experimenting with portfolio pieces. Plus there are tons of different ways to succeed, but it's still an anxious time! :P On an unrelated note: Does anyone else's "Materials Check List" still have things marked as "Not Received?" My high school transcript still hasn't been received and I'm getting a bit worried since we're so close to March. My checklist displays "1 received" for letters of recommendation. I asked admissions if I should be worried, and they said that having just one wouldn't delay the review of my portfo...    less

From the Admissions FAQ: "The notification period for the admission decision will be approximately March 1 through April 1 for students that applied by the regular deadline of January 5. There may be cases, however, where the decision will take longer."

Josh I was thinking about slightly dog-earing some of the better pages, but I really hope they take the time to look at every page. By the way, for those of us delivering our sketchbooks in person, where do we take them? Directly to the admissions office?

I've been thinking... I've been worrying so much lately to the point of headaches... but, Even if i get rejected this year... i know its not the end, and there is always next year to apply.. and this idea alone makes me much happier because my dad is finally coming around to the idea of me going into the art field, im not saying he is fully accepting of the idea, its just that he just begining to understand that this is what i want to do... maybe slowly accepting? just knowing that he'd be ok with me persuing this brightened my day (and week!) because i had thought since the past few days that this decision (being the only art school i applied to) would dictate the rest of my life because i saw this as my only opportunity to show him that i could do it. but i think he might be ok with it now. Ive just benefitted from this experience so much. And after the portfolio, ive sort of adjusted my style to a more animated style and i feel like im slowly finding where im comfortable in art (though i do need so much more life drawing experience, and experience in general). I've been drawing for since i remember, but animating really does differ from fine art. But really, im just starting to appreciate what i did gain from this exeperience.

@Josh: at first i thought you were a pretty snarky person, but you are really someone who inspires me because you stuck with it for so long. And you're someone who i look up to so i hope you don't mean to hurt my feelings over snarky remarks >.> haha.. but yea! congratz in getting in!! and thanks for understanding how all of us who didn't get letters feel.

I know i don't talk much on this site/thread, but i just felt like saying a couple things. hey people!

Now this is the right attitude! =) I think that part of the reason this thread got so explosive is that so many got accepted all at once. If two or three had been accepted per day through the course of the week, I don't think the "but what about meeeeee?!?" reaction would have been so strong. Anyways, a continuing congratulations to all accepted!

What I'm saying is that yes, technically it is a competition, but you should think of it more as are you at the right level to get in and not are you better than these people.

I got the number ~480 for Character 2012 from one of the people in the admissions office who was filling in for Andrew Ahn at an information session. And I think you're right that it is more of competition between you and their standards than it is between you and other applicants. They said to me at the same information session that while they shoot for 50, if there are more than 50 that they are interested in, they will accept more.

Then again, their facilities can only handle so many people. The number of applicants rises every year, and they can't just expand the program infinitely. It wouldn't surprise me if this year they had to turn away a huge amount of promising applicants that they like, to keep the program at a managable capacity.
