It helps think about layout, and helps change scenes in life into layouts/backgrounds for animation/illustrations.   You should also check out the 'Drawn to Life' series by Walt Stanchfield. There a compendium of all of his lecture notes that he gave to his students over the years. They are a gold mine for sketching hints and tips!   They're rather cheap on Amazon if you buy them used! Hey Rob! You've got a great drawing style and I love your work album! Can't wait to see you upload some more. How long you been drawing for? It would be great to see some different aspects of drawing such as backgrounds, life drawing, props etc. Hope that helps!

He talks about how he got through to where he is, and he had a similar situation of wanting to get out of the job he had but also not being able to afford the top colleges. He talks about his inspirational drive of just doing as much as he possible could (even working 2 solid jobs to support his family and also chase his aspirations), sending his animated short stories to companies over and over and over. But never giving up on it, or never letting a failure bring him down from his ultimate goal of working for the Animation Giants.   Hope this helps you out and inspires you :)  less

When it comes to doing observational drawings, you could draw a box and try and capture the scene within it. It helps think about layout, and helps change scenes in life into layouts/backgrounds for animation/illustrations.

    Hey Liza

Take a look at this video from Pencil Kings:

If you skip to 3:45 and listen to Aaron Hartline (currently an Animator at Pixar, previously worked at Blue Sky Studios on such films as Ice Age, Horton Hears a Who, Robots etc.). He talks about how he got through to where he is, and he had a similar situation of wanting to get out of the job he had but also not being able to afford the top colleges.

Hope this helps you out and inspires you :)
