would a live-action short film be worth including in the supplemental portion of a calarts character animation portfolio?

Here are my suggestions, forgive me for rambling: You describe form very well with line, but I have seen portfolios with beautiful descriptive drawings get rejected. They want to see that you can not only draw the figure well, but also be very expressive with it. --From what I've heard they value your ability to *simplify forms*, laying out a figure in basic shapes. Definitely include your best traditional/realist figures, but I would go so far as making 1/2 of your included figure drawings gestures, from 1 min to 5 min poses. --It's also important to show construction in some of your drawings to show that you're thinking about the figure in three dimensions. Some really good examples of figure construction here, from Kevin Chen: http://analyticalfiguresp08.blogspot.com/ (If you google his name you can find hundreds more of his drawings. He teaches figure drawing at Art Center...    less

Jessica Morrison Ah, my absurdly long comment got cut off. My other tips were *Include many dynamic poses that convey movement. I think this is wat screwed me over the first time I applied. Do lots of gestures of people in exaggerated or dynamic poses.

hiiiii.  so... i was reading somewhere that MOST people don't get accepted to calarts on the first try or from right out of high school.

    1.  is this totally true?

    2.  and if so, is this just coincidental?  (like, the work coming from transfers or students who take a couple years off after high school to work on the portfolio usually have better stuff, just because they've been working on it longer?)

    3.  or, is it intentional?  (like, applicant would only look like he/she is serious about animation if he/she applied multiple times?)

    4.  and would their review be tougher on transfer applicants or applicants NOT right out of high school?
