Yes I'm applying to CalArts too, but I'm having problems with finding a portfolio big and safe enough to send my stuff in from India. Gaaaaah. I wish they'd be happy with just pictures >.<  Oh and I saw your work too, ohmygosh, it looks amazing! :) I see we both find inspiration from Gabriel Lin :P  Could you critique my work? I'll do yours! :)

    Some portfolio suggestions/pointers, please?
I actually joined animatedbuzz almost a year ago. It was pretty obvious by my early work that I didn't have a clue. BUT. It was pretty obvious by my early work that I didn't have a clue. BUT. I'm a senior this year, so I've got a little more experience under my belt, and I believe I've prepped enough to put something together to finally show you.    That said, tear this apart. I've got my first national portfolio day this year in just 2 days and I expect admissions to be pretty blunt, but this forum has a special kind of directness to point people in the right direction. And although I've pretty much narrowed it down, I know I can always do better. I'm not sure what the exact balance between supplemental work and figure drawing should be. Also, my sketchbook has a few doodles from imagination in it, will this be a setback?   The poses are pretty short, I've got gestures from 15 seconds to 3 minutes and long poses from 35 minutes to 3 hours. (although that only applies to the acrylic painting.)   Here it is- http://www.animatedbuzz.com/albums/view/1054 &nb...    less

Yep! I'm applying for BFA Character Animation next year as well. (: It feels so weird to say that, time flew by so fast! Only a year left! It's cool to see so many people interested in applying.

Brandi- Awesome! Juniors! Thanks so much for the help, I only recently discovered the stretch/crunch technique, which I know sounds crazy. Haha in fact this whole calarts thing is really on a whim, I only seriously started looking at it about a month ago. (:

I appreciate that you see that, and the majority of the reason behind reffing Bridgman's (p2&4) (and a photo ref too, for 5) was the lack of life drawing, especially one with action oriented poses. Because for reaaaal we had (to my knowledge) no drawing classes available. Still though, there are other sources available and I need to do that! I actually just enrolled in a life drawing class just last week and started tue/thur classes yesterday so I'll post updated pictures that are from a model. As for six, yeah adding edges is relatively simple to do so I'll focus on line clarity in the future. I worry sometimes that bold lines create a 'cartoony' look. Thanks sooo much for the help; there's no such thing as an antagonistic review! ;D  less

I don't know how justified I am to give critiques, but I think the main thing you need to work on is including hands, feet, and faces. Right now I see you oversimplifying the feet and hands, or not including them at all, and from what I've been told, CalArts really looks for that. And with faces, worse than a crummy, quickly drawn face is no face at all. Really try to include some features, even if they're just quick lines that suggest features. And really, overall just keep practicing! I see some anatomy problems, but observation and practice are what will fix that. I love the blue and yellof figure done in, what is it marker? Watercolor? It's lovely.   Thanks so much for your advice! Yeah, I really do need to work on hands, feet, ect. I've got a couple of life drawing classes upcoming so I'll try and focus on making those more visible. As for the blue and yellow figure, it was done in watercolor and pen. (: Thanks again!  less

Thanks for the tips! :) Also added in new work.   I'm a junior in high school, so I won't be applying to CalArts until next year. That's both good and bad, because while I get time to improve my portfolio, it also gives me time to stress. :) Below is a collection of figure drawings that I've done, and I'd love critique so I can improve my weaknesses and heighten my strengths. Be as honest as you need to be, any little bit helps. Work here ranges from 45 seconds to 10 minutes each.       less
