Your application materials and your portfolio must be mailed in two separate packages to the Office of Admissions. Programs will require portfolios to be submitted either by mail or online.

I was told to do as much sketches from life as possible (<- imporant!). Also when i asked a CalArts lecturer if i should just send in all my sketchbooks or pick out my good ones and send in a compiled visual diary of the best sketches I've done, he said he'd recommend i compile. I'll probably send in a compiled one plus another one or two little sketchbooks just to show that I'm really drawing everyday.

I believe it means exactly what it says:

Sketches of your everyday life. 

Drawings that illustrate film ideas and story concepts.

Thumbnails of scenes that you plan to animate one day.

Random jottings that interest you.

Character designs.

Studies of images from films you like.

But it never hurts to add something extra in i believe. though if these are what they specifically said they'd like to see, i think it's best to just give them what they wnat first and then add in the extras as a little cherry on top kinda thing haha
