So I emailed Andrew Aahn a couple weeks ago to ask for my portfolio critique and not much was said. One comment was my sketches and life drawings needed a second pass to make them stronger, and the other was that i has great life drawings to keep going and pushing myself. Not too bad, but my comments to myself are much more harsh which i think is a good thing since i know my mistakes. Then i was told about the Calarts portfolio workshop that John Mohoney teaches over an 8 week period through a calarts online program. So i emailed school and was told that i had to submit 5 drawings or painting for John to review to see if im accepted. I needed to do this quick though since the deadline was last friday. So i quickly put together 5 pieces:

And while i was at the lake with my girlfriend and friends the next day i recieved an email that i had been accepted. WOOHOO. So im really looking forward to working hard and preparing my next portfolio while recieving some well needed advice:) I think the class starts next week and goes on until the first week of july.

Just started listening to deadmau5 and man i'm loving it. I've loved electronic music for many years and its awesome drowning out to this guys music while drawing.

Well im trying to draw more with a line rather then a messy sketch, so hopefully in time (Which i should) i'[ll get much better, but i must start somewhere. Here is a self portrait of me focusing on a single line:

Forgot to crop it, since crappy scanner cant itself, lol. And here are some characters i came up with recently:

i enjoyed drawing these, but need more practice when it comes to drawing bodies. For some reason i've been struggling with that but practice with cure it in time. Also heres a drawing of me looking bored at work, i get up at 3:30 am for my "fun" job unloading and stocking at target. If i couldn't listen to my music, i think i'd go insane:

I read a post andreas deja posted on his blog "Deja View" and he spoke about his concerns with animation and the direction it has gone since CG animation has pretty much shadowed 2D animation. Then i came upon "Destino" and it struck me how gorgeous 2D is, when done the right way. Its not that people dont like 2D it's, in my opinion, that no one has jumped in front of the line and brought it back to life for everyone to see. Little shorts, or half hour movies are made with it but no one i feel has been brave enough to bring it back, and really go all out with it. Cartoon network it seems is the only one that really uses it on a majority of its shows, but i miss the 2D that was captivating for its characters that were so real but so cartoony. Not all out of proportion with noodles for legs and arms, haha. The talents is clearly out there, someone just needs to know how to use it without being annoying with it.

I havent posted anything in awhile so i decided to start posting some characters i create. I plan on doing a character a day but probably wont post one everyday, instead just create a collage of characters every few days to post. Here is my first character that i enjoyed drawing, not sure what his name is but i have an idea of his story :)

So i was roaming the internet when i came upon a beta version for adobe photoshop cs6. So i downloaded it and watch a couple quick tutorials.

I was drawing the other night and came up with this and thought i'd color it in photoshop. Now i like how it turned out but there are some things to correct. Next time i plan on scanning the image i intend to color. Here i just took a pic with my iphone. So here is the outcome:

You can kind of tell by the shading of white in the backround that it was a photo instead of a scan. Well i'll be doing lots more before this trial end

Here's a digital piece I did earlier. I've been mainly drawing in my sketchbook doing observational studies. I'll post some of that stuff when I collect a good amount. And I also was leaving Barnes and noble after sketching earlier tonight, and saw this truck. Remind you of something?

Well like the previous post here is the letter confirming my rejection. Was i surprised? Not the least bit. I thought about what i did and what i could have done and when i compared the two, i barely did anything to grow as an artist and show the review committee that i am ready for the character animation program at CALARTS. my sketchbook in my opinion was lame and lacked creativity, and every observation looked very similar and showed my lack of knowledge. My portfolio itself i felt was good, but i didnt show enough of the figure as a whole, just the bust, or top half. I know what i need to work on and there is no break to take so my future posts will be dedicated to my growing progress to what hopefully will be my acceptance into the fall 2013 school year:)

Here's a couple of pages from my sketchbook to start it off.

Well it looks like its a no go for Calarts :( received my rejection letter just a short bit ago. I'm REEAAAALLLLY bummed out right now, but I had a feeling of this possibility and I just have to suck it up and soldier on. Once I have more time to absorb everything I'll write more :)

Here are a couple pics I've drawn in the past couple days. The first was inspired by my girlfriend when she gave me a hug and said, with my jacket on it was like hugging a cloud. The second was done at some Italian restaurant where you could draw on table cloths. My brothers had been watching a YouTube video of " the saxman" :)

Watched the movie drive the other day which I really enjoyed and was inspired to make myself the main character in drawn form. I really like this. :)

Just thought I'd post what I've practiced on earlier. Just trying out different styles and overall wanted to get a better feel for drawing arms and hands. Did all of these in 20 min:)

Just got done watching a Bruce lee movie and felt the urge to start a fight and destroy everyone. This was made possible by drawing it;)

I downloaded sketchbook pro on my iPad today, went and bought a stylus, and finally produced my first ever successful digital painting, took about an hour( I think) I was painting while learning how to use it so hopefully next time will be much quicker:) enjoy
Update:  Alright so i decided to do one more today (am really enjoying this) and i like how this one turned out:)
